Abstract This paper focuses on recent developments in UK health research policy, which place new pressures researchers to address issues of accountability and impact through the implementation patient public involvement (PPI). We draw an in-depth interview study with 20 professional researchers, we analyse their experiences competing for funding, focusing PPI as a process governance. unearth dominant narratives scepticism alternative identifications enactment policy. argue that such evidence resistance ways has been institutionalised resulting subject-positions are summoned take up. show subjectivities emerging this landscape governance increasingly disempowered, contradictory fraught unresolved tensions over ethical dimensions researchers’ own identities.
